5 Tips for Better Digestion After Hysterectomy

Digestive issues are a common experience after a hysterectomy, but there are ways to ease discomfort and keep things moving smoothly.

Here are 5 tips for better digestion and regular bowel movements post-surgery:

  1. Fiber is your friend: Aim for at least 25g of fiber per day (some specialists say 35g). Keep in mind that you might need to build up to this amount slowly over weeks or months. Soluble fiber helps solidify stools, while insoluble fiber can help relieve constipation.

  2. Gentle abdominal massage: A light digestive massage can help reduce tension and stimulate peristalsis (those wave-like muscle contractions that move food through your digestive tract).

  3. Relax your pelvic floor: If you’re constantly gripping or holding tension in your pelvic floor, it can make it difficult to have a bowel movement. Practice relaxing these muscles.

  4. Get moving: Whether it’s walking, dancing, or even using a vibration plate, movement helps stimulate digestion. If you’re not getting at least 5,000 steps a day, start there. The benefits for your overall health are huge!

  5. Rethink your relationship with coffee: I know it’s tempting to rely on coffee to get things going, but if you need coffee to have a bowel movement, you might be more constipated than you realize. Try having coffee later in the day to gauge your true digestive health.

By incorporating these habits into your routine, you can help support your digestion and feel more comfortable as you heal.

Which tip do you think you’ll try first? I’d love to hear how it goes!
