Holiday Bladder

The holidays can be a tough time if you have had abdominal or pelvic surgery recently.

Heavy foods, alcohol, sugary snacks, and late nights can all throw off your system.

Here’s how to know if you have “holiday bladder”:

  • Waking up to pee at night suddenly happens more often than you’re used to

  • Pressure in your lower abdomen, like there’s rocks in there

  • flare-ups of lower back pain that you already had

  • Feeling like there’s always more left after you pee

  • Large (5+ pound) weight fluctuations

The good news? It’s OK to exchange some discomfort in favor of holiday events and your favorite drinks and foods.

But you deserve to understand your body instead of living in a place of worry because your bladder is suddenly worse.

If you don’t want to live with it through the holidays, here are some tips to help:

  • Focus on hydration. One small glass of water for every other drink.

  • When you can, stop drinking 2-3 hours before bedtime.

  • Eat a protein-focused meal before going for the snacks and desserts.

  • Create a nighttime mobility routine to calm your bladder.

  • Find “abdominal massage for digestion” on YouTube.

  • Get the damn squatty potty.
