Post Endometriosis: Your Guide to a Better and Faster Recovery
What is Endometriosis?
Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the lining inside the uterus, called endometrium, starts to grow outside the uterus. It is a lifetime disorder and while symptoms can be managed via surgery, surgery is not a cure.
Endometriosis can lead to severe pain, heavy periods, and infertility. It commonly affects the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and the tissue lining the pelvis but can impact almost any tissue in the body.
Endometriosis can significantly impact quality of life, but surgical intervention, such as endometriosis excision surgery, can provide relief and help manage symptoms.
What to Expect After Endometriosis Excision Surgery
Recovery from endometriosis excision surgery involves managing both immediate post-operative symptoms and long-term healing. Here’s what you can generally expect:
Initial Recovery: After surgery, you may spend a few days in the hospital. Sometimes, surgery is an outpatient procedure. Pain and discomfort are common, and pain management will be a priority during this period.
At Home Recovery: Once home, you will need to rest and limit physical activities. It is common to experience some abdominal pain, bloating, and fatigue. Following your doctor’s instructions on activity levels and medications is crucial.
Long-Term Recovery: Full recovery can take several weeks to months. Gradually, you will be able to return to your normal activities, but it’s important to return to strenuous activity on your body’s unique timeline. There is often a lot of work needed to undo the trauma to the abdominal wall, especially if you’ve experienced severe, chronic bloating or had excision performed to the abdominal wall or diaphragm.
