Emotions + Pain

People with unprocessed emotions have a harder time getting out of pain after surgery.

No, I don’t mean “it’s all in your head.”

I mean, the emotional weight you’re carrying is so heavy that it’s actually manifesting in physical pain.

Here are some symptoms I’ve seen many women encounter:

  • Stomach distress, including ulcers

  • Insomnia

  • Hair loss

  • Unpredictable, shooting pelvic pain

  • Repetitive belching and painful bloating

  • Pain with sex

  • Pain with urination

  • Tension headaches

Of course, any of these symptoms can also have a medical component!

But sometimes, it’s our emotions standing in our way. Not as an obstacle to be pushed out of the way but as an alarm bell, begging us to listen.

Begging us to...

  • Repair that relationship.

  • Book that mental health appointment.

  • Set the boundaries we need.

  • Take that extra rest.

  • Move our bodies.

  • Stop that self-criticism.

  • Acknowledge our medical trauma.

  • Process our grief.

If you resonate here, finding a mental health provider may be the next best step in your journey. I certainly have one leading into my own surgery!

I’d also love to hear from you. What are you experiencing around surgery?
