Urinary Retention

Your urine leaking may not be leaking at all.

I work with women all the time who’ve done kegel upon kegel to fix their “stress incontinence,” only to learn they have urinary retention.

In other words, they can’t get all your pee out!

This can even leave a little urine behind in the urethra, which causes leaking when you get up to move. No amount of kegels can fix this!

Here are some things that can help:

  • At-home massage of the pelvic floor muscles surrounding the urethra

  • Pelvic relaxation techniques

  • Removing or reducing bladder irritants

  • Abdominal massage

  • Pelvic opening stretches

  • Strategies to fully empty

If these strategies fail, a urogynecologist may also be able to help!

But if you’re reporting “leaking” and haven’t been asked about "retention,” there may be some puzzle pieces missing.

If you have questions, my inbox is open.
