Estrogen Tips

Having a hysterectomy can be a catalyst for menopause education, which we should all get much earlier in life…

If you’re there now, it can be so confusing.

Is hormone therapy safe or not? How can you find a doctor you can trust?

While I’m not a physician, I have had the privilege of helping hundreds of women navigate their recovery as a physical therapist.

In fact, I’m often the first person to notice something isn’t right and encourage them to find a good physician (teamwork! 🙂).

Here are some things I’ve learned along the way that I wish every woman knew:

  • Menopausal hormone therapy is safe in almost every case and can be life-saving.

  • If you’re having your ovaries removed, you should have a hormonal replacement plan BEFORE surgery. Not doing so is medical neglect on the part of a physician.

  • Look for a physician certified through the North American Menopause Society (NAMS) or something similar if you live elsewhere.

  • Estrogen replacement should be affordable and efficient. There are a lot of "anti-aging" clinics and medical spas trying to sell women expensive versions of MHT. Be careful.

  • More and more physicians are recommending vaginal estrogen for ALL women over 50 to prevent pelvic floor problems and vulvar pain. I tend to agree. It’s an incredible compliment to pelvic floor work.

  • Don’t forget about telehealth. There are more and more physicians offering services across state lines, even through insurance. You’re not limited to where you live.

  • Sometimes, paying out of pocket for the right physician is worth it. It may cost $400–$600 for a visit, but you can save a whole lot more than that by getting ahead of the chronic disease risks of menopause. If you can’t find a supportive doctor via insurance, think outside the box.
