Leaking Urine is Normal?!

You may have heard this phrase before: “Leaking urine is common but not normal!”

I used to say this, too… but I changed my mind.

Leaking urine is normal. AT LEAST half of all women will experience it in their lifetime, but it’s probably more.

I think the phrase “it’s common but not normal” creates fear, shame, and urgency, which is exactly what I’m trying to change in my career.

And if at least half of us will experience it, how is that not normal?

Now for the nuance: normal does NOT mean you have to live with it.

Do you know what else is normal?

  • Joint pain

  • Age-related physical changes

  • Menopause + related symptoms

  • Back pain

  • Constipation

  • ... so many other things

“Normal” means you’re not alone. You aren’t the only one. You have nothing to be ashamed of.

There is help out here if you want it; it should be easily accessible (just like it should be for all the above)…

BUT it’s up to you whether you get help and when you choose to get it.

So let’s remove the stress, urgency, and shame around incontinence.

You have nothing to be ashamed of.
You are normal, AND you deserve help if you want it.

PS: Caveat: If you’ve had a drastic change in your bladder or bowel function for no apparent reason, that typically warrants a trip to your doctor sooner rather than later. Just as your typical headache is not a medical emergency, sudden and severe headaches may be. There is always nuance in medicine, and this message is directed toward my ladies who’ve been leaky for a long time and feel pressured to overcome it ASAP.
