Uncommon Bladder Irritants

The common health disorders that lead to pelvic surgeries often come along with bladder symptoms. Things like…

  • Frequency

  • Urgency

  • Urine leaking

  • Bladder pain

  • Pelvic pain

  • Bladder spasms

  • Trouble emptying your bladder

Bladder irritants can exacerbate many of these symptoms. This is particularly true during the initial weeks following surgery, when your body is still adjusting.

Not everyone experiences bladder irritants, so you don't have to avoid them all. That would be miserable since it’s things like chocolate, spices, and coffee.

But sometimes, our bodies aren’t predictable, and it’s actually something unexpected that causes the irritation.

Here’s a list of surprising bladder irritants: I've seen people with the above symptoms feel better after cutting one of these out...

  • Honey

  • Squeezing a few lemons in her daily water

  • Liquid IV electrolytes

  • Plain carbonated water

  • Various supplements (supplements are totally unregulated in the US, and we really have no idea what’s in them)

  • Cacao

  • Corn syrup (it’s in everything!!)

  • Artificial sweeteners (in lots of “fitness” foods)

  • Cranberries (aren’t they supposed to help??)

So yeah, sometimes our bodies surprise us, and it’s NOT the chocolate, coffee, alcohol, or hot sauce.

Sometimes it’s the healthy stuff.

Do you have any sensitivities to any of these? I’d love to hear from you!

PS: Please don’t take this message as me telling you to cut all of this out. What I'm saying is that the culprit could be something unexpected. If you tried limiting the common stuff, think broader and don’t give up on feeling better!
