Strengthening Your Pelvic Floor and Abs After Surgery

After surgery, it’s easy to focus solely on the pelvic floor, but don’t overlook the importance of strengthening your abdominal muscles, too. For most people, having stability in your abdomen is crucial for overall recovery.

When your abs aren’t providing the support you need, your pelvic floor often compensates, which can lead to a variety of issues. Here are some signs this might be happening to you:

  1. Back pain when standing still.

  2. Glute or leg exercises cause back pain.

  3. Incisions still hurt many weeks after surgery.

  4. Persistent swelly belly that won’t go away.

  5. Urine leaking during daily activities.

  6. Inability to do a sit-up.

  7. Your back “goes out” randomly after surgery.

  8. Pelvic soreness, pressure, or bulging feelings.

  9. Urine leaking with activities like jumping or lifting.

  10. Your abdomen looks looser or stretched out after surgery.

Just doing internal pelvic floor exercises likely won’t resolve these issues. You need to zoom out and assess your entire body’s movement.
Understanding how your abs contribute to your daily activities and exercise is key to creating a holistic plan for improvement.

When you take this full-picture approach, you can feel:

  • Stronger than ever

  • Confident that your exercise is safe

  • Able to consistently maintain your routines

  • Get real results from your exercise again
