What is "Swelly Belly" and Why it’s Not Just Bloating
Have you heard the myth that you’re supposed to swell for up to a year after surgery? If you’ve had an uncomplicated procedure, this just isn’t true. Unfortunately, it’s a myth created by a healthcare system that often lacks the time to give you the support you deserve.
But first—how do you know if you actually have “swelly belly”?
Swelly belly is fluid retention in the abdomen, similar to how a sprained ankle swells if it’s not fully cared for. The key sign? Swelly belly gets worse after activity and improves with rest.
What swelly belly is NOT:
Bloating
Constipation
GI distress
Food intolerances
SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)
Body composition changes
Increased visceral fat
Loose skin
Posture changes
These issues can certainly arise after abdominal surgery, but they are not the same as swelly belly. It’s also possible to have a combination of swelly belly and some of these other symptoms.
So, what’s the first step? A proper assessment is key. Don’t assume prolonged swelling is normal—there could be more going on that needs attention.
Do you think you might have swelly belly, or something else? I’d love to hear your thoughts and help you figure it out!
