3 Ways To Manage Pain Post-Hysterectomy

A hysterectomy is a very difficult procedure on the body even though it can be life saving!

Here are three simple ways to manage pain after a hysterectomy…

#1 Abdominal Massage

Most people are safe to begin abdominal massage 3-6 weeks after surgery but it depends on your pace of healing. At the beginning, a general massage can improve drainage of swelling and reduce pain. However, not everyone requires abdominal massage even with large incisions. It just depends.

As your healing progresses, there are more techniques such as myofascial release and scar mobilization to reduce the risk for adhesions and loss of mobility from scar tissue. This is especially essential with larger incisions. The belly button incision in a laparascopic surgery is also a common source of discomfort.

#2 Deep Breathing

Deep breathing stimulates our body's “pump” system to reduce swelling, calm our nervous system and decrease pain. Most people are safe to start deep breathing exercises immediately… like, while still in the hospital!

I recommend breathing exercises for every single one of my clients!

#3 Take Your Meds!

It does you zero good to compare yourself to others who claim to have never needed pain medication after surgery. We are not competing with one another.

Take your meds on schedule. There's no reason to suffer for the sake of Facebook points.

Want to reduce your risk for long-term pain after surgery? Strengthen your core!

Check out this video for the first steps to positioning + activating your core.
