Proactive Recovery After Surgery
After surgery, waiting and seeing isn’t your only option for recovery! There’s so much you can do to enhance your healing process right from the start.
In the days following your procedure, consider focusing on breathing exercises.
Most hospitals provide an “incentive spirometer” to help prevent post-op pneumonia, but this tool also serves as an excellent way to rehab your core and pelvic floor before you even leave the hospital.
While there are many reasons women may undergo a hysterectomy, a lot of us are dealing with issues related to pelvic floor tension.
Symptoms like pain during sex, constipation, cramping, urinary urgency, frequency, and leaking can indicate a need for elongation rather than more Kegels (shortening).
It’s crucial to recognize that relaxation techniques for the pelvic floor can be introduced before or right after your surgery.
Walking is often the recommended first step after surgery, but it’s actually pretty hard on our pelvic floors and there are plenty of gentle exercises that can support a comfortable and successful recovery while you build up your walking endurance.
Most people can start exercising soon after surgery with activities such as:
Upper body exercises
Hip exercises like bridges
Various low pressure leg exercises
The key is to tailor these movements to your unique situation and fitness levels. Getting moving early can significantly help you feel better, faster!
