Overcoming Post-Surgery Challenges: Retraining Your Bladder

I’ve been a patient, too, and I completely understand how frustrating it can be to have surgery and still not feel 100% like you hoped. Remember, surgery is just the starting line, not the finish line.

Don’t give up if everything isn’t perfect right away!

One of my biggest struggles has been with my bladder. While my hysterectomy significantly improved my bladder capacity (I can even sleep through the night—if my daughter lets me 😅), I’m still dealing with some overactivity during the day.

But here’s the good news: WE CAN FIX THIS! Our bodies are incredibly adaptable, and there’s a path forward. Here are some strategies I’m using to help retrain my bladder:

  1. Learn diaphragmatic breathing. Shifting into a parasympathetic state can help calm overactivity in your bladder.

  2. Calf raises. Going up and down on your tiptoes can help reroute the signals and ease the urge to pee.

  3. Meditate. A calmer body leads to a calmer bladder—take time to center yourself.

  4. Practice progressive muscle relaxation. This technique can also support your bladder health.

These strategies have made a difference for me, and I hope they help you too. If you’re facing challenges after surgery, remember that you’re not alone, and it’s possible to find relief and regain control.

Let’s keep working together on your healing journey!
