Surgery Fixing Back Pain?

Short answer: sometimes.

Long answer: not always. But it usually makes it easier for the things you’re trying to do to actually work. Let’s get into it…

Back pain is the #1 most common thing I see in women who’ve had a hysterectomy or myomectomy.

For many of them, they had back pain before surgery, and they hoped surgery would fix it.
For a smaller percentage, they developed back pain for the first time after surgery.

Either situation can be incredibly discouraging.

If you’re in the first bucket, surgery may not have fixed it, but I find these women are finally able to see improvements once the culprit was removed in surgery. They just have to take action to build the mobility + health habits their body needs.

For the second bucket, these women usually need to rebuild the coordination, strength, + endurance of their abs. This can be a 3-6 month process IF there aren’t other factors contributing to the back pain.

Things that can slow this timeline can be stuff like:

  1. Having pre-existing back issues. Arthritis, disc issues, chronic back pain, etc.

  2. High-stress lifestyles and/or a history of anxiety.Frequently ruminating on pain makes it worse. These people often recover faster with the addition of mental health support.

  3. Poor sleep quality. If you don’t feel rested when you wake up, this can slow down recovery.

  4. Sedentary lifestyle. If you’re not walking ~7k steps a day, your circulation + lymph flow are going to be stagnant. This is how our body clears waste products + inflammation. These people often have more aches and pains + slower healing timelines.
