Understanding Pelvic Floor Issues Post-Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy often gets a reputation for causing pelvic floor issues, but it’s important to recognize that many of these problems are actually linked to the conditions that led to the hysterectomy in the first place—not the surgery itself.

One of the most common conditions is fibroids, which can cause a range of symptoms, including:

  • Swelling

  • Inflammation

  • Pressure

  • Urinary frequency

  • Bladder retention

  • Urine leaking

  • Fecal smearing

  • Constipation

  • Prolapse

Years of living with the pressure, straining, and loss of mobility can contribute to worsening pelvic floor function over time. While pelvic floor physical therapy can help alleviate these symptoms, as fibroids progress, there may be limitations to what we can achieve.
In such cases, surgery can be a necessary step toward healing the pelvic floor. However, it’s crucial to understand that this is just the beginning!

Surgery is the starting line and just because your symptoms aren’t 100% gone doesn’t mean you can’t still make progress.

Did you have symptoms of fibroids you hoped would go away after surgery but they didn’t?
